As Jesus is walking on the shore by the Sea of Galilee He sees Simon and his brother Andrew casting a net. Jesus asked them to come and follow Him and He would teach them how to catch people instead of fish.
Mark 1:16 Now as he walked by the sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and Andrew his brother casting a net into the sea: for they were fishers.
Mark 1:17 And Jesus said unto them, Come ye after me, and I will make you to become fishers of men.
Simon and Andrew followed after Jesus. These were the first two men Jesus decided to pour His life into. As I read about what happened I noticed something. Simon and Andrew were not looking to change careers as bad as the fishing industry was; they were, fishermen. Why do I say the fishing industry was bad? By what I just read. Simon and Andrew were casting their net, not nets and I didn’t read where they were catching fish. Then in verse 19 James and John were mending their nets. Can’t catch fish with holes in the nets.
Mark 1:19 And when he had gone a little further thence, he saw James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother, who also were in the ship mending their nets.
So these 4 men left the fishing business; wait, wait, wait a minute! I had to go back and read how much of a salary they were offered. All I could find was this: Jesus said “I will make you to become fishers of men.” Jesus asked these men to leave the business they knew, with the words of I will make you become! That takes time, that takes commitment, that takes effort, that takes new learning. Jesus didn’t say “learn what I am about to teach you and in less than 5 years you’ll have more than you know what to do with. Had Jesus gave them a job description it may have sounded like this. The journey I’m asking you men to be a part of will be hazardous, there will be constant danger, wages small and will require long months and painful deaths. These men stepped off the ship into a life of being servants of the Most High. What an honor. Before it’s over Jesus will ask 8 more men to do the same and they too will follow.
