Mark 12:38 (KJV) And he said unto them in his doctrine, Beware of the scribes, which love to go in long clothing, and love in the marketplaces,
Scribes were generally the most educated men in the nation and as such became influential. They were like lawyers and judges in our day.
Luke 11:52 (KJV) Woe unto you, lawyers! for ye have taken away the key of knowledge: ye entered not in yourselves, and them that were entering in ye hindered.
These scribes were educated as well as influential. They loved to be out in the public, dressed nicely, shaking hands and holding babies making an impact on people, winning them over. People even in our day like to know people they think have influence. Haven’t you heard “I’ll talk to Jim, his dad is the president.” Not long ago I called a close friend who is the associate Pastor of a large Church here in our town. The reason was I wanted to ride with police officers here in our city. It just so happened that the chief of police was a member of his church. I got my friend to ask the chief. I had my first ride along 10/10/23. So like I said we like to know people who know people. So these scribes were men, who were listened to and thought well of in the city. They were men who were members of the Synagogue as well as teachers. Here comes Jesus and says beware of these men. Beware of the Scribes! Why? They love greeting people with a smile. They love the act of paying respect or reverence by customary words or actions.
Matthew 7:15 (KJV) Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves.
Those types of people are around us today but we don’t call them scribes. Remember influential people because those influential people of those days were Mark 12:40 (KJV) Which devour widows' houses, and for a pretence make long prayers: these shall receive greater damnation.
Let me explain what these scribes were doing. They rob widows by taking their houses and then say long prayers to make themselves look good. The elderly of our day are big targets. This happened to my mother. Oh it wasn’t her house. My dad put that in an estate. It was the changing of money into another account. Question, to whose benefit? Not her’s! Enough said. Read your Bible, know your Bible
Ephesians 6:13 (KJV) Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.
Ephesians 6:16 (KJV) Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked.
RU ready to stand in the evil day? Be careful who you put trust in. All influential people are not bad. There are many that have a heart of gold and help a lot of people. But then there are those that aren’t.
