If I were to
say Doubting Thomas most everyone would know who I was referring to.
John 20:24 But Thomas, one of
the twelve, called Didymus, was not with them when Jesus came.
John 20:25 The other disciples
therefore said unto him, We have seen the Lord. But he said unto them, Except I
shall see in his hands the print of the nails, and put my finger into the print
of the nails, and thrust my hand into his side, I will not believe.
Here was a man by the name of Thomas who missed seeing
Jesus. Thomas had for whatever reason decided not to be with the rest of the
other disciples that Sunday night. He
had witnessed the Lord dying so when he heard the news that Jesus was alive it
was just more than he could believe so he said I just can’t believe. This is
what the word doubt means:
Doubt- To question, or hold
questionable; to withhold assent from; to hesitate to believe; as, I have heard
the story, but I doubt the truth of it.
Have you ever heard of doubting Zacharias? He asked
“how shall I know”
Luke 1:18 And Zacharias said
unto the angel, Whereby shall I know this? For I am an old man, and my wife
well stricken in years. Because
of his doubt Zacharias was made speechless
and was not able to hear for nine months. What can we learn here? Doubt in
God’s ability or His Word will hinder us from doing our best for Christ. How
can you or I be motivated to put God’s Word into practice if we doubt it or don’t believe it. Doubt says I’m not totally
convinced. I’m not sure this is true. I don’t know if I can trust what I have
heard. If I don’t see it I will not believe it. Sounds good until you put the
word “faith” in front of you. I love it when it’s put this way
Roman 10:17 So then faith cometh
by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.
So to built up our faith we are going to have to hear
God’s Word. Where would one go to hear the Word of God? What about the Church
house? The more you and I hear the Word of God the less likely we are to doubt
what God says.
